Natural increase
Natural increase, or excess of births is the difference between the number of live births and deaths. If the number of live births is lower than that of deaths, natural population increase is negative.

Net migration
Net migration is the difference between immigration and emigration.
Marriages
Marriages where at least one of the spouses has resided permanently in Finland on the day the marriage was contracted. Includes also marriages of same-sex couples starting from 2017.
Divorces
Divorces where at least one of the spouses has resided permanently in Finland on the day the divorce was granted. Includes also divorces of same-sex couples starting from 2017.
Population increase
Population increase is the sum of natural increase, intermunicipal net migration and net migration. Population increase can also be negative.
Population correction
Population correction is the difference between total change and population increase. Corrections are mainly adjustments made later to errors occurring in handling of notices of removal.
Total change
Total change is the difference between the number of population in two consecutive statistical reference periods. Total change was calculated in January 2021 from the final population of 2020 instead of the preliminary population in the table. The difference between the preliminary population in December and the final population is caused by removals made to the final statistics.
